A steel fixer, also known as a reinforcing ironworker, is a skilled construction professional responsible for the installation and placement of steel reinforcement in concrete structures. As a steel fixer, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Reading and Interpreting Blueprints: You will review construction blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications to understand the required placement and configuration of steel reinforcement within the concrete structures. This includes identifying the size, shape, and positioning of steel bars (rebars) or mesh that need to be installed.
- Fabrication and Cutting: You will cut, bend, and shape steel bars or mesh according to the required dimensions and shapes indicated in the blueprints. This may involve using hand tools, such as rebar cutters and benders, or machinery to ensure accurate and precise fabrication.
- Installation and Fixing: You will position and secure the steel reinforcement in the formwork or molds before the concrete is poured. This includes tying rebars together with wire or using mechanical fasteners to maintain the desired spacing, alignment, and elevation as specified by the project requirements.
- Safety and Quality Assurance: You will adhere to strict safety protocols while working with heavy steel bars and equipment, ensuring the safety of yourself and others on the construction site.
