Job Summary: A shuttering carpenter, also known as a formwork carpenter or concrete form carpenter, specializes in constructing temporary structures and molds (formwork) used to support concrete during construction projects. As a shuttering carpenter, your main responsibility is to create precise and sturdy forms that provide the necessary support and shape for poured concrete, ensuring the successful completion of various concrete structures.

Job Duties:

  1. Formwork Construction: Interpret construction drawings and blueprints to determine the required formwork design and dimensions. Construct temporary wooden forms, molds, or frameworks using lumber, plywood, and other materials, based on project specifications.
  2. Layout and Measurement: Take accurate measurements and mark layouts on the ground or existing structures to determine the positioning and alignment of formwork. Use measuring tools, such as tape measures, levels, and squares, to ensure precise dimensions and angles.
  3. Reinforcement Installation: Install steel reinforcements, such as rebar, inside the formwork according to engineering plans and specifications. Secure the reinforcements in place using wire ties, clamps, or other fastening methods.
  4. Formwork Assembly: Assemble the wooden formwork components, including panels, beams, braces, and supports, to create the desired shape and structure. Ensure that the formwork is properly aligned, leveled, and securely fastened to withstand the weight and pressure of poured concrete.
  5. Concrete Pouring and Finishing: Assist in the pouring and placement of concrete into the formwork, collaborating with concrete workers or equipment operators. Ensure proper concrete consolidation, leveling, and finishing techniques are employed to achieve the desired surface quality.
  6. Formwork Stripping: Remove formwork after the concrete has cured, using hand tools or power tools as necessary. Carefully dismantle the formwork while minimizing damage to the concrete structure. Dispose of or prepare the formwork components for reuse.
  7. Safety and Quality Control: Adhere to safety protocols and regulations to prevent accidents and injuries. Conduct regular inspections of formwork to ensure structural integrity, stability, and compliance with construction standards. Make adjustments or repairs to the formwork as needed.
  8. Material Management: Estimate and request the required materials for formwork construction, such as lumber, plywood, nails, screws, and hardware. Organize and maintain an inventory of formwork materials and tools, ensuring their proper storage and maintenance.
